Chapter Strategic Plan/Goal:
Encourage Central Iowa ENA members to become CEN certified.
2007 Plan for Membership Recruitment
and Retention:
Support nurse educators/preceptors responsible for orienting new ED nurses by
providing information and literature about the ENA and promoting membership in
the ENA.
2007 Chapter Priorities:
1. Select a Central Iowa ENA member for the Gerri Hagerty Award.
2. Encourage four hospitals who have not hosted a chapter meeting within the
past 5 years to serve as hosts for the 2008 Central Iowa
ENA meetings.
3. Increase attendance at the Central Iowa ENA Chapter meetings.
2007 Public Policy, Regulatory and
Legislative Priorities:
1. Support a law that would require all motorcyclists to wear helmets.
2. Support a law that would increase penalties for drunk drivers.
3. Support a law that would create a national data base of people who are
willing to donate their organs upon death. The hospital would be legally bound
to uphold their wishes.
2007 Injury Prevention Priorities:
1. Bike and Helmet Safety
2. Child Passenger Safety
3. Take Care I: Safe Medication Use and Fall Prevention for Mature Adults
2007 Educational Priorities:
1. CEN Certification
2. Family Presence at the Bedside During Invasive Procedures and/or
Resuscitation
3. Injury Prevention

Nominations are being accepted for the Gerri Hagerty
Memorial Nursing Award.
This award is sponsored by the Central Iowa ENA Chapter and
is named in honor of Gerri Hagerty, a Certified Emergency Registered nurse who
worked in the Emergency Department at Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames. Gerri
suddenly passed away October 2002. Gerri was a long time member and active
participant in the ENA. She was a teacher and mentor to nurses and was deeply
committed to Emergency Nursing. Gerri was past President of Central Iowa’s ENA.
She was actively involved in ENCARE as a certified child passenger safety seat
technician. She helped Story County develop one of the premiere Sexual Assault
Response Teams programs in the nation and became a certified Sexual Assault
Nurse Examiner to help victims of abuse and rape.
This award recognizes one nurse each year that practices in
an Emergency Department within the State of Iowa. Peers will recognize the nurse
as a leader, mentor and activist in emergency nursing.
Letters of nomination should be submitted no later than
December 31st and should contain information about the
nominee that highlights qualities listed below.
